Jacques Vachon

Other Names: Joseph Andres Jacques Olivier Vachon

Comments: At the age of 11, Jacques was sent from L'Ange-Gardien to a religous prepatory school (Juvenate) in Compton. He did not like this school, so he returned home. Jacques worked as a farm laborer. He and Bertrand moved to La Patrie where he lived with Raoul and was entrusted with 32 pairs of horses used to haul timber. In 1955, he moved to Cochrane to work in the lumber camp, but a large fire forced him to move south to Ontario to harvest tobacco. He met his wife, Simone, while back in the St-Gerard area. Life was not easy when they moved to Chibougamau in norther Quebec Province. He worked in a nearby mine. In 1966, they moved to La Patrie and worked in a saw mill that went bankrupt. Jacques bought a restaurant in 1968. He ran the "Au Coq d'Or" for three years. At the same time, he started a business selling chain saws and snowmobiles. After selling the restaurant, Jacques took his other business to Weedon, where he also bought a farm and sold vegetables at his road-side stand. In 1984, he went to work in a gold mine in Montauban. In 1986, Jacques and Simone retired to Weedon where they built a small house.
