Comments: Daniel was born in Nova Scotia
as an Army brat. His father served in India, Burma, Gibralter,
and Malta, according to Mervyn Lockyer. Eventually, they
settled in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales where a widowed Mary raised
the children.
Mervyn originally stated that John Thomas was born in
Port Talbot, Ireland. Port Talbot is a city located on
the coast of Wales, South of Merthyr Tydfil. All U.S. censuses
for Daniel indicate his father's birthplace as Ireland
rather than Wales. Of those O'Connels that name an Irish
county of birth in the County Glamorgan, Wales, 1871 census,
almost all name County Cork, Ireland.
According to the 1900 census taken in Southington, CT,
Daniel O'Connell immigrated into the U.S. in 1881; Mary
McNamara two years earlier in 1879. He was naturalized
9 Nov 1885 in Fall river, MA. All 5 children were born
in Wareham, MA between 1888 and 1898. According to the
1881 Merthyr Tydfil census, Daniel (age 25) boarded with
the John McNamara family along with his step-father James
Crowley. John McNamara had a wife and daughter named Mary.
The wife was age 27 and the daughter age 3. The Mary McNamara
that Daniel married came to America before 1881; we can
find no record of her in the 1880 Massachusetts census.
Daniel must have travelled to America shortly after the
1881 Merthyr Tydfil census was taken.
